Mental Disorders

In class, we saw some videos about mental disorders. The one that surprised me the most was DID (Dossociative Identity Dissorder) also known as Multiple Personality Disorder. “It is a mental disorder characterized by at least two different and relatively enduring identities or dissociated personality states that alternately controls a person's behavior, and is accompanied by memory impairment for important information not explained by ordinary forgetfulness”. It would be really bad to have this kind of disorder, but there´s actually some people who have it. Some cases about it have been presented on TV, news, etc. and the people who usually develop it have had problems in the past, those kind of problems that affect psychologically a person for the rest of their life. For example, this woman called Tracey, who has 5 personalities, was raped three times! How could anyone have a normal life after that? Obviously that´s the reason why she is mentally affected. The problem is that she is not the only affected person, but everybody around her. Some people believe that this is kind of a fake disorder because it would be easy for anyone to pretend to have multiple personalities. I think that it is true that it can be easily acted but I also believe that there are real cases about it.
Some other very common disorders are OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) and Bipolar Disorder.
“Obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder characterized by intrusive thoughts that produce uneasiness, apprehension, fear, or worry, by repetitive behaviors aimed at reducing the associated anxiety, or by a combination of such obsessions and compulsions“. The principal symptoms are repetitive actions, fear, worry. For example, they wash their hands very often, they are always checking if everything is just as they left it or looking around to know if there is something that can put them in danger, etc.People with this disorder have to receive an especial treatment, because comparing with other disorders, people can actually get through this one and after some years they can have a normal life or at least something close to it. “Obsessive–compulsive disorder affects children and teenagers as well as adults”.
Bipolar disorder, consists of mood changes constantly. It´s really difficult to diagnose bipolar disorder because it can be confused with unipolar depression. “What distinguishes bipolar disorder from unipolar depression is that the affected person experiences states of mania and depression” When they are depressed they feel guilt, anger, sadness, anxiety and most of the times hopelessness, besides, when they have a maniac episode they experience euphoria.
All of this disorders affect a person´s life a lot. I think that it is really hard for them not to have a normal life, and even harder to try to get through them. It should be terrible to have to worry always about something.
This kind of disorders affect people´s life in every single way. I think that this are strong people because they learn to live with it.

OCD :D

OCD- or obssesive compulsive disorder is a Psychological problem that 1 of 40 people in the US has, you can spend more than 9 years and you don’t even notice you have it! The person who has this obsession is afraid of germs, contamination and dirt, he or she will always try to keep everything clean, they usually out things in plastic bags because they think that like this germs and dirt wont pass through, also, this people use to wash their hands with hot water and a long an complete process, and if they touch the garbage bin by accident they will try to keep away germs and it doesn’t matter if they already have washed their hands, they will do it again and again until they are sure that they have no germs or contamination, some of this people are afraid to going to the street. In my opinion this is a severe  problem that should be treated because it can affect their life’s , family and job, I think that people shouldn’t be that afraid of all this germ stuff because when you are exposing frequently to germs, you immunologic system will work harder and better and its weird you get sick like this, like a farmer, he is all day and night with animals an the doesn’t get sick.

Dissociative identity disorder

Dissociative identity disorder  (DID), also known as multiple personality disorder, is a mental disorder characterized by at least two distinct and relatively enduring identities or dissociated personality. These symptoms are not accounted for by substance abuse, seizures, other medical conditions or imaginative play in children. Diagnosis is often difficult as there is considerable comorbidity with other mental disorders. Malingering should be considered if there is possible financial or forensic gain, as well as factitious disorder if help-seeking behavior is prominent.
Example:
Tracy is a person who has Dissociative identity disorder she has five personality´s:

Miss Anne: she is the caring identity she takes care of the children’s.

Becky: she is the one that most comes out. She is the worst identity she hurts Tracy’s body because she says that Tracy needs a punishment for not listening the other identity’s

Emily: always needs her mom because she is too little she is ten years old she loves coloring and she is very shy she is scared and always crying.

Susy: she hides behind a pillow she does not want to talk she is very shy too.

Samantha: she is de ceu it means that ahe always wants to be in charge.
Her first other identity was when she was two years old the second was at 10 and the third was at 17.

Obsessive–compulsive disorder

Obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder characterized by intrusive thoughts that produce uneasiness, apprehension, fear, or worry, by repetitive behaviors aimed at reducing the associated anxiety, or by a combination of such obsessions and compulsions. Symptoms :
excessive washing or cleaning
 repeated checkin
extreme hoarding
 preoccupation with sexual.
The acts of those who have OCD may appear paranoid and potentially psychotic. However, OCD sufferers generally recognize their obsessions and compulsions as irrational, and may become further distressed by this realization.

Bipolar

Bipolar disorder is a condition in which people experience intermittent abnormally elevated (manic or hypomanic) and, in many cases, abnormally depressed states for periods of time in a way that interferes with functioning. Not everyone's symptoms are the same, and there is no simple physiological test to confirm the disorder. Bipolar disorder can appear to be unipolar depression. Diagnosing bipolar disorder is often difficult, even for mental health professionals. What distinguishes bipolar disorder from unipolar depression is that the affected person experiences states of mania and depression. Often bipolar is inconsistent among patients because some people feel depressed more often than not and experience little mania whereas others experience predominantly manic symptoms. Additionally, the younger the age of onset—bipolar disorder starts in childhood or early adulthood in most patients—the more likely the first few episodes are to be depression.[7] Because a bipolar diagnosis requires a manic or hypomanic episode, many patients are initially diagnosed and treated as having major depression.

MENTAL DISORDERS

DISSOCIATIVE IDENTITY DISORDER

Is also known as multiply personality disorder, and is c, the presence of two or more identities or personality states...that recurrently take control of behavior.
An example of dissociative identity disorder is the case of Tracy, Is a woman who claims that she has 5 personalities inside her: BECKY, SAMANTHA, SUSIE, MISS ANNE, EMILY, she is married and is a mother, but the thing is that she said that ‘’BECKY ‘’ one of her personalities is the one who wants to kill her, the most violent and the one who appears more frequently.
She appeared in the TV show Dr Phil and I think this disorder maybe exist but I think you can’t become like really fast to the other personality and if you become the other personality the don’t know each other is like you become a different person with a different mind.
The physiologists that treat this disorder I think they can resolve it only with therapy’s because you know the brain is the most complicated part of the body and only by talking I think it’s impossible, this disorder most have medicine .
The bad part of this I guess is that what kind of personality you develop because like in the case of Tracy that she has a dangerous personality that is threatening her by hurting herself.
But my conclusion is that I think this case is fake, and this disorder well yes it maybe exist but not in that point.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

Well known as OCD and is a disorder that characterized by intrusive thoughts, I mean, things that you think will happened if you do an action and that worry and fear that  will become an obsession.
The most common problem with this disorder is the one with the cleaning, People who has Obsessive Compulsive Disorder take like 9 years to be diagnostic by a psychologist or a doctor about this disorder.
The symptoms are:

OBSESSIVE THOUGHTS.

·        Fear of Dirt or Germs.
·        Fear of Causing Harm.
·        Need For Order & Symmetry.
·        Sexual/Religious/Violent Thoughts.
COMPULSIVE BEHAVIORS.

·        Extreme Cleaning.
·        Excessive Double-Checking.
·        Ordering/Arranging.
·        Mental Rituals.

This disorder can really ruin your life if you have it , it can control every aspect in your day, this disorder make you be worry all day and I think that is horrible.
To stop the behavior of this disorder you’ve got to engage in ‘’normal’’ behavior and responses for at least 90 day or psychotherapy.

BIPOLAR DISORDER.

Bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depressive illness, is a brain disorder that causes unusual changes in mood. Symptoms of bipolar disorder are severe. They are different from the normal ups and downs like depression that everyone goes through from time to time. Bipolar disorder symptoms can result in damaged relationships, poor job or school performance, and even suicide. But bipolar disorder can be treated, and people with this illness can lead full and productive lives.
People with bipolar disorder experience unusually intense emotional states that occur in distinct periods called "mood episodes." An overly joyful or overexcited state is called a manic episode, and an extremely sad or hopeless state is called a depressive episode. Sometimes, a mood episode includes symptoms of both mania and depression. This is called a mixed state. People with bipolar disorder also may be explosive and irritable during a mood episode.
Extreme changes in energy, activity, sleep, and behavior go along with these changes in mood. It is possible for someone with bipolar disorder to experience a long period of unstable moods rather than discrete episodes of depression or mania.

Dissociative identity disorder

Dissociative identity disorder (DID) or Multiple personality disorder is a mental disorder characterized by two or more identities that control a person’s behavior.

The symptoms of DID are:

·         Inability to recall personal information

·         Often they refer to themselves as we, he or she

·         Severe headaches

Most of the patients with DID report sexual abuse and physical abuse.

Yesterday we saw a video of a woman that suffers of DID in which she showed the things she use or used to do, like hurting herself and no control in her behavior. Tracy said she has 5 personalities: Susan, Becky, Miss Anne, Samantha and Emily, and she showed how she calls each of her identities. The Becky’s identity called my attention because it’s kind of strange how Becky wanted to kill Tracy because she thinks she’s a bad person and things like that. That video didn’t convince me, I think she was acting because she called Becky when she wanted Becky to come and I think DID come without signal.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a disorder characterized by intrusive thoughts that produce uneasiness, apprehension, fear and repetitive behaviors.

The symptoms are:

·         Excessive washing or cleaning

·         Repeated checking

·         Extreme hoarding

·         Preoccupation with sexual, violent or religious thoughts

·         Relationship-related obsessions

·         Aversion to particular numbers

·         Nervous rituals such as opening and closing doors

Yesterday we saw a video of a woman that has OCD, the video shows that the woman used to wash her hands every time she touch something, like the door, the mailbox, even her baby! She washed her hands with soap and hot water, she washed her hands, part of the arm and her nails, and every time she finished she had to be careful because if she touches the trash can she has to wash her hands again. It’s a crazy obsession. She didn’t carry her baby; she dragged her baby with a bedcover because she did not want to contaminate her hands. I can’t imagine how awful it’s a life like that, I mean it isn’t life. She didn’t carry her baby! HER BABY! Her own blood! I think people with OCD and DID suffers a lot! They can’t live a normal life like us.

Bipolar disorder

Bipolar disorder describes a category of mood disorders defined by the presence of one or more episodes of abnormally energy levels.

The episodes bipolar people experiment are:

·         Depressive episodes

·         Manic episodes

·         Hippomanic episodes

·         Mixed affective episodes

The causes of bipolarity can be genetic, physiological and environmental. Doctors use a therapy that it’s called “light therapy”. I think DID, OCD and bipolar disorder can’t be cured because they are mental diseases and nobody can cure or treat your mind, or maybe they can do something but for you to not be that “mad” but they can’t cured for real.

I hope one day someone find a cure for these three diseases and cure all people that are suffering for this. I think the worst illness is OCD, cleaning everything around always and washing your hands every time you touch something… It’s like a horror movie, they need help and we have to help. We can help with taking those people to the doctor or something like that.

MENTAL DISORDER, OCD, BIPOLAR.

MENTAL DIORDER

The most important in terms of mental disorders, it is referred to as dissociative identity disorder. They describe it as the existence of one or more distinct identities or personalities in the same individual, each with its own way of perceiving and interacting with the environment. Also associated with memory loss, forgetfulness is not normal, but small lapses amnesic. Although not to be confused with schizophrenia which is also associated with dissociation.

In the field of multiple personality psychiatrists and psychologists is a very controversial term, few would seriously give this diagnosis. Most are not considered a mental disorder, but a mere delusion based cultural and therapeutic.

An example is a person named Tracy who mentioned that he had five personalities:

Emily a 5 year old girl.

Sisie a girl of 10 years.

Becky's aggressive.

Samantha CEO.

Miss Anne's caretaker.

OCD

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder (like agoraphobia and social phobia) characterized by intrusive thoughts, recurrent and persistent, that produce uneasiness, apprehension, fear or worry, and repetitive behaviors called compulsions to reduce associated anxiety. The TOC is contained within the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV).

The discovery that some drugs are effective in the treatment of OCD has changed the view to be had of this neurological problem. Today not only effective therapies exist, but there is a great deal of research on the causes of neurological problem and a search for new treatments.

One example is of a girl who is wash your hands every time you touch something that she and I cleaned aya taca tend to wash their hands nearly 20 times wing washed hour.

BIPOLAR.

Bipolar affective disorder (BAD), also known as bipolar disorder and past as manic-depression (PMD) is a psychiatric diagnosis that describes a mood disorder characterized by the presence of one or more episodes of abnormally elevated energy levels , cognition and mood. Clinically reflected in states of mania or, in milder cases, hypomania with concomitant or alternating episodes of depression, so that the affected usually oscillates between joy and sadness in a much more marked than people who do not have this pathology.

The basic element for the treatment of bipolar disorder is awareness of the problem, its knowledge by the affected and their relatives through psychoeducation to enable them to cope with the crisis without unfounded fears and most valid tools, as well as prevent relapse. Custom Drug therapy, especially during the phases of imbalance is another key. Benzodiazepines, antipsychotics and mood stabilizers are the most commonly used drugs.
